Chairside whitening uses a bleaching product in a dental setting to lighten natural teeth. The starting point is an assessment of the reason for discolouration and the health of the teeth and gums. A brighter colour is not, by itself, proof of healthier teeth.
What happens before whitening?
Tell the dentist about sensitivity, pain, gum problems, previous whitening and visible fillings, crowns or veneers. Existing restorations do not whiten in the same way as natural teeth, so a colour mismatch may remain. Dental problems may need attention before cosmetic treatment. NHS: teeth whitening
What happens during the appointment?
The team explains the intended result and process, protects the surrounding tissues and applies the whitening product according to its instructions. Some systems use a light and others do not. The number and length of treatment stages depend on the chosen system and individual circumstances. Ask what is included rather than assuming every appointment follows the same schedule.
Will it hurt, and will the result last?
Tooth sensitivity and gum irritation can occur. Tell the dental team if symptoms develop and follow its advice about further applications. Results vary with the original tooth colour, type of staining and habits. Whitening is not a permanent guarantee of a particular shade. NHS: benefits and risks
Is whitening the answer to every colour change?
No. Surface staining, a single dark tooth and a white patch may need different assessment. Cleaning can remove selected surface stains, whereas bleaching changes the colour of natural tooth tissue. White spots may require another approach; read about ICON resin infiltration.
